Note: The following has been prepared from an article that appeared in the 1957 Hendon Local Association booklet that marked 50 years of Scouting. It was prepared at their invitation by Frank Griffiths, assisted by Lionel Siret and Jack Le Fort.
The 9th Hendon, originally known as the 2nd Mill Hill, was founded in 1927 by Mr Dudley A Jarrett, at St Paul’s C.E School. Its colours were yellow and navy blue. In 1930, under GSM Dudley Hall, the Troop left Mill Hill Village and moved to an ex-army hut at the Rawlplug Factory in Hale Lane. In 1932 the Group moved again, this time to a hut in the garden of the Railway Tavern and again later into a bungalow in Stoneyfields Lane. Shortly after Mr Dudley Hall emigrated and Mr ‘Scottie’ Brown took over as GSM. Finally the Group moved into its own Headquarters built by Mr G Childs at Bunns Lane where they continued until the end of the last year. During the war years the GSM was ‘Skipper’ Harvey and Mr M Friend ran the Troop from 1945 – 49. Mr Yarwood took over until 1952, then Alan Whitbread carried on until the final closure in 1956.
