Note: The following has been prepared from an article that appeared in the 1957 Hendon Local Association booklet that marked 50 years of Scouting. It was prepared at their invitation by Frank Griffiths, assisted by Lionel Siret and Jack Le Fort.
In 1911 at the request of the vicar of Hendon, Mr J W D Talling, the Secretary to the London Diocean Boy Scouts’ Association formally inaugurated the St Mary with Christ Church Troop St. Mary’s (8th Hendon) Group with Mr F Bonner as Scoutmaster and Mr B H Easter as his assistant. The Group did claim to have started earlier in the Old Stables, Prince of Wales Road, Church End.
Through all the vicissitudes of the changing years this Group has maintained its identity and progress and remains today in the same commanding position that it has always enjoyed, steeped in tradition and constantly inspired by its own history. The Group is now led by Leslie Raines who for many years was assistant to Mr A G Curtis who very ably led them from 1917 until his death in 1950.

According to the District Directory dated June 1965, this Group was still in existence and still being led by Leslie Raines who is also recorded as the SM. Mrs P Hedge is recorded as the CM. They met at the rear of St Mary’s Church House, Church End, Hendon NW4 and their scarf was green with a badge (Paschal Lamb).
