17th Hendon

Note: The following has been prepared from an article that appeared in the 1957 Hendon Local Association booklet that marked 50 years of Scouting. It was prepared at their invitation by Frank Griffiths, assisted by Lionel Siret and Jack Le Fort.

For many years Mill Hill School too has had its own Scout Troop, known as the 17th Hendon (Mill Hill School). It was formed in 1930 by Mr H Coates who was its first GSM.

The Group meets in a hut in School grounds which was opened in May 1934, by the late Sir Percy Everett, then Deputy Chief Scout. History records that in 1923, Sir Robert Baden-Powell addressed the School on ‘Boy Scouts’ and showed the film ‘Tenderfoot Tim’.

The present Scouter is Mr A Jackson.

Description of ‘Tenderfoot Tim’ from The Pathéscope Film Catalogue of 1941: “Just those qualities of entertainment and instruction looked for in a film on Scouting will be found in this picture made available by courtesy of the Boy Scouts’ Association. “Tenderfoot Tim” recounts the story of Jack and his plan of bringing into the Movement a boy whom he can instruct in all the elementary branches of the work of his Troop.”
