Taking on new Leaders: The Process

Date: 30th Jun 2021 Author: Andrew Rush

You may well have seen that The Scout Association (SA) has started a new process for ensuring that new Leaders (including Section Assistants) are working to a programme to get them trained and suitable for the role they have taken on.

Once they have agreed to take on a role then SA says that they must complete their initial training and appointments process within 5 months. Sounds tough at first, doesn’t it, but we have had a good look at the process and how we can best help get people properly started.

You can download here a welcoming document from the District which should be given to incoming Leaders and Section Assistants. It shows the process they need to go through.

It really isn’t that hard when broken down. One bit of good news is that the Leader can do all the start-up training courses on-line.

We have also had a hard look at the Appointments process and how what we said before, about how we want to do things in Barnet, should be modified.

Let’s start at the point when you have agreed a role for a new Leader. You will with them enter all their details onto Compass. When we say all their details we also include putting in the names of two referees. We strongly recommend completing their application for a DBS at the same time.

Once they are on Compass the clock starts ticking and if they have not completed the Appointments process and the initial training in the next 5 months then the process will be automatically stopped by SA.

In order to help the candidate have the maximum time to complete the process we do ask you, as the Line Manager, to let us know that you have this new person. We have brought together the Appointments and Training sides of the process so that one e-mail to barnetappt@btinternet.com will do the trick.

So, it’s very simple: get them on to Compass and let us know you have done so, please.

To summarise:-

  • Recruit shows interest
  • Line Manager agrees role with recruit and puts them on to Compass together with the details of their two referees
  • Line Manager lets District know through barnetappt@btinternet.com and starts Disclosure  process
  • Local Training Manager and Appointments Secretary take over to complete the process
  • Within 5 months we have a new leader.

Thanks for your help keeping this simple.
