Gone home – Grace Fensome
It is with great sadness that I have to tell you that Grace passed away last Tuesday, 25th April, peacefully in Barnet Hospital aged 93.
For the younger ones among us a little about her: Grace married into the 15th Finchley when she wed Alan Fensome. As his right hand girl she was deeply involved in the Group from Day 1.
When Alan became Group Scout Leader she was his stalwart backup as those of us who can recall those days could recount. She helped to set up Beavers in the Group, and ran two Cub Packs in the Group.
In 1995, upon Alan’s retirement, she took over as GSL for a few years, a time when we had two Beaver Colonies and two Cub Packs. Great days. After that she was still heavily involved in the Group, especially the Senior Citizens’ party and editing the Group magazine “The Utopian”.
Grace also took on work for the District: editing the monthly news letter and being Honorary District President. (That was of course in the old F2BG2 days.)
A strong character she was a tender warm-hearted lady who had to maintain a family of 4 children with a husband who was an obsessive Scout; not easy to get the balance right, and she was the glue that kept it all together.
We wish her well into the next life and pass our condolences on to her children, Laura, Jane, Richard and Claire as well as to her grandchildren and great grandchildren. A sorely missed lady.
Her funeral will be at St John’s Church, Friern Barnet Road N11 3EQ, on Friday, 26th May at 11.30am. After the service the family will go with her to the cemetery for the burial, but have arranged the use of the church hall, behind the church, for people to gather and they will return there.
As a Scout Group we will look into having a Memorial Service for her at a later date.
If anyone wants to send a card then that can go to her daughter Claire Woodrige; please contact me for her address.
The family have not yet confirmed where any collection will go but if you want to know please come back to me and I will let you know as an when they do.
Sorry to be the bringer of such sad news.
All the very best
Frank
