Gone home: Alan Garner

Date: 21st Jul 2021 Author: Andrew Rush

It is with great sadness that we learn from Enfield Scouts that Alan Garner has passed away.

Alan joined the Scouts as a leader in 1973, having previously been a Scout himself. He went on to become GSL at the 6th Enfield based at St Luke’s church. In 1993 Alan joined the Enfield District Team as Assistant District Commissioner Scouts, a role he held whilst also working as the District’s Appointments Secretary. He later became a member of both the District and County Executive Committees before joining the Galleon active support unit.

Alan, along with his wife Barbara, also supported the Southern 50 competition where they provided a warm welcome to many tired, wet and weary walkers. He also supported Barbara throughout her Scouting career and events such as the London Pantomimers pantomime productions each year.

Alan loved Scouting and throughout his extensive volunteering he also made sure to have a smile on his face and would support any leader who asked.

Alan has without doubt influenced, encouraged and made wonderful memories for many young people in Enfield Scouting and beyond.

We join with Enfield Scouts in sending our thoughts to his wife Barbara and their family at this difficult time.

HM King Charles III has been confirmed as our new Patron, a great honour for UK Scouts.

The King continues a long tradition of the monarch giving their Patronage, dating back to 1912. This was when Scouts was granted its Royal Charter and HM George V became our first Patron.
