Frith Grange latest

14 May 2018
Firstly thank you to those that read my emails some time ago pleading for the return of the missing kitchen equipment.  We seem to have largely recovered the missing items and it makes the facility much more user friendly, so from Tony, The Crew, Estates Team and I THANK YOU.

As many of you know the District Exec hire Frith out during term time to Oak Bridge; this brings in a brilliant income to help to support Scouting in Barnet but does bring its own costs and pitfalls.  We have all complained about the mess, the clutter, the poor time keeping that we have suffered with.  I have historically questioned if Scouting is taking second place as have many of you.  The District Exec spent a lot of time tightening up the issues, the school have a much stricter contract and I am sure they’re far from perfect but things are dramatically better.

When the Estates Committee was formed by the DC we asked for feed back on how Frith is used, why it’s not used by some and what could be better.  The three key messages that we got were there are not enough activities on site,  the parking is a nightmare and the place looks unloved and is dirty.  I appreciate that these views may not be yours, but they do represent the majority of views expressed.

You all know the story of The Lodge; it’s old news and the bedrooms and toilets now do not look dirty and unloved,  they’re actually punching nicely above their weight!  The feedback from users is very positive on the whole.  Some locally were very upset and against the work being done and the sums of money spent.  However I’m pleased to be able to report the bookings have increased and we have within the space of a year nearly recovered the entire cost of works done with many more bookings to use this upgraded facility in the pipeline!

The work in The Lodge became a larger, more time and energy consuming project than we would have liked and as such other areas of work have not been addressed overly well,  but plans are being drawn up all the time and with a little more time you will see other things happening I am sure!  One quick fix was to replace the cleaning company and manage their visits more closely and now I hope people will not find the site as dirty and hopefully will recognise signs of improvement.  There is much more work to do,  and we will need much, much more help too.  Watch out as we have a working evenings or days having a general tidy up and a plea for dump runs very soon!

HOWEVER the burning issue.  Sad, blunt but factually correct we (Barnet District Scouters) collectively are the dirtiest and most disrespectful users of Frith by a long way.

We have no paid staff,  we do not have a full time crew presence and this is nothing new.  We all know this and accept that it’s ours to look after but we just are not doing it.  The site is being left unreasonably dirty, keys are not being returned the same day, Groups, sections and units are not booking but turning up etc.  Sadly we Barnet Scouters need to up our game please.

Please see the guide to house keeping at Frith on the District Campsite page and share this with your team of leaders and communicate with parents about the limited parking at Frith.

Thanks in advance for your support.  If we can stop energy and time being consumed with these small things we’ll continue to work at achieving the big things so that everyone will benefit.

Many thanks
